Longford GAA Coaching & Games
To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly.
As per contact from Damien all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the Club Underage secretaries’ address ONLY. Every Underage Section has their own secretaries address ad goes along the lines as follows: (email@example.com). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring this accounts and passing the information to the relevant people.
Award 1 Coaching Course
On Saturday the 12th we commenced an Award 1 Youth/Adult Coaching Course with 17 participants signed on. The course runs over 5 contact days (3 X Saturdays + 2 X Thursdays). This week see the group complete the course on Saturday the 26th. Engagement in the modules to date have been excellent with coaches set tasks of planning sessions and solutions to team problems which they must complete as homework. There are 4 coaches on the program from Clubs in Leitrim so again this is a great way for these coaches to share ideas and to see how other Clubs and Counties go about their business.
Elite Player Development Bursary Program
This Friday will see those successful applicants from our EDP program receive confirmation on being awarded a bursary under the 20/20 Vision For Longford Development Plan. All members of the EPD program were informed of this initiative since early September with those eligible to apply having to have their applications in by the beginning of October. The application process was very robust and involved reports and feedback from the student’s college course heads and college GAA managers as well as attendance at EPD sessions (all things the individual was in control of themselves). The standard of applicant was very high and the support for this initiative has grown in recent weeks with many businesses expressing an interest in supporting the program in the years ahead which is excellent news for any player who strives to be an Elite player for Longford on the field while working hard to achieve educational qualifications off the field. There will be more details on this program in the weeks ahead when the bursaries are been presented.
Referees Bursary Program
Very similar to the EPD program there is also a Referees Bursary Program which closed for applications this Monday the 21st. Again there will be more information on this at a later date.
Our indoor hurling program for kids of 2nd – 4th classes continued last week with St. Colmcille & St. Emers primary schools in attendance. These blitzes will take place every Friday until Christmas as well as some other random days during the week as demand has been so strong these extra dates and venues had to be sourced. As part of partaking in these blitz days Kathlyn will also be visiting those schools and taking coaching sessions with those kids who will be participating. Again the demand for a program like this shows the interest there is for hurling within our primary schools and Kathlyn looks forward to harnessing this in the months ahead.
Last Friday we ran a Rounders workshop for Primary school teachers in Edgeworthstown Sports Hall. 13 teachers attended the WS and it was a great success with some really positive feedback. The teachers discovered the various and many ways Rounders can be adapted and modified to suit varying abilities and ages and we now looking forward to hearing back from the schools in the months ahead as to how they get on as they introduce the game to PE classes. It is also the schools intentions to arrange some participation blitzes in the spring and hopefully put on an exhibition during half time of one of Longford’s home NFL games.
On Wednesday the 30th we will be hosting a Gaelic Football Teacher Training WS in St. Mels College from 4 – 5:30pm. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting Kathlyn or Paddy on the numbers below.
Our Primary football blitzes continue every Friday for the next 3 weeks but unfortunately the change in weather means we have to take things day by day based on pitch availability and temperatures. Last Friday we were in Abbeylara as 80 kids from Aughnagarron, Granard & Killasonna attended the blitz. We were then due to up sticks and head for Carrickedmond but the day was bitter cold wit rain moving in in the afternoon so it was decided with the Colehill & Lenamore Schools to call it off which proved a wise decision in the end. This Friday sees us visit Longford Slashers where St. Emers & St. Michaels will be in attendance. This will be week 8 of 10 in the program. 10 TY students from St. Mels (6) and Cnoc Mhuire (4) help organise the blitzes and then manage a team each while also refereeing the games.
Longford GAA Master Fixtures & Events Calendar
There is a link on our website which allows anyone to download our Masters Fixtures document as any time. This document is the template for the Official Fixtures that the Secretary distributes weekly but is not considered as Official notification of Fixtures if downloaded as only fixtures sent from the County Secretary can be considered Official. This should be people’s first port of call for information regarding Longford GAA events.
We also have an Events Calendar on our website at http://longfordgaa.ie/cg-calendar/ This calendar contains everything a Longford GAA person might need to know from our full fixtures program to Club workshops to County Board meetings to National fixtures to other large sporting events so as everyone can see what’s happening in the weeks and months ahead. Any changes made will be updated on the calendar in real time and will constantly evolve as different scenarios arise.
