Development Squads

Monday last seen the start of our U14 Development Squad tournament kick off. This saw 58 players divided into four teams to battle it out over the next three weeks for places on the U15 development squad. The O Farrells had a big win against the Pearses in the first game but the second game turned out to be a cracker between the Shannonsiders and the Midlanders. The Midlanders held an 11 point lead at half time but a storming comeback with some brilliant point taking gave the Shannonsiders a 4 point win.

The Paul Barden U16 Development Tournament started off last Monday, which seen the pick of U15, and U16 Footballers in the county do battle against each other. This will also be used as trials for the 2016 Minor and U16 Development squads.

Last Friday five of our development squad coaches started their Leinster GAA Resistance Training course that is being held in Athlone IT. This course will be very worthwhile for the coaches, as their development squads will be starting their Athlete Development work in November. The area of resistance training is becoming a huge part of team preparation and this course will aid Longford footballers hugely now and into the future.

Development Squad Mentors

As part of “20/20 Vision For Longford”, Longford GAA are now looking to recruit mentors for our various Development Squads (U13, U14, U15 & U16) for the 2016 season. The role of mentor within our squad system is a very rewarding one and comes with great responsibility, as you will help mold Longford’s footballers of the future. All our squad mentors are facilitated with up skilling courses and involved in a program of continuous learning. All mentors will receive Longford gear and will be supported by Coaching & Games regarding planning and logistics. If you are interested please make contact with Damien at or 087 912 6556

Go Games Fixtures

Our Go Games fixtures are down to the final blitz, which will take place this Wednesday. Since April 139 blitzes have taken place throughout the county at U8 and U10 level involving outdoor, indoor and floodlite matches. This is a huge undertaking and would not be possible without the assistance of clubs, mentors, parents and most importantly all the boys and girls who take part each week, so thank you one and all.

Club Development

There are still a number of clubs that need to return their Questionnaires and SWOT Analysis and clubs should get back to their facilitator as soon as possible. There are also a number of clubs who have still to confirm what developmental program they want run within their club. Paddy or Damien can be contacted in this regard.

Schools Programs

Our urban program is now entering week two in the Longford town area. The program involves primary school coaching in five schools as well as two evenings of indoor football in St. Mels College Sports Hall. Unfortunately due to a lack of interest from the kids in two of the schools we will no longer be running with the Thursday evening session. This program will run for four weeks in total before we cover the remaining two Templemichael schools and cover the Ballymahon Urban area.

Last Friday we held blitz three and four of our 2nd, 3rd and 4th class blitzes which will run for 10 Fridays in total as we will run 24 blitzes involving 1500+ kids. This program would not be possible without the assistance of 4 TY students from both Cnoc Mhuire & St. Mels as they complete a 10 day work placement with us. The full schedule has been sent to all schools and is 95% full with only one space for a school with small numbers in the north Longford area left. This Friday’s blitz will see St. Matthews NS Ballymahon, St. Marys NS Edgeworthstown and Glen NS attend two separate blitzes in Mostrim GAA grounds.

Our program of Pella continues on Thursday’s as last week the girls from Cnoc Mhuire Granard attended with 1st years in Edgeworthstown Sports Hall. This week see the girls from Scoil Mhuire Longford take part.

Tuesday the 13th see the TY’s from Cnoc Mhuire Granard put into practice what they learned over the last few week as they took a group of kids from the local primary school for a coaching session. These TY’s will continue this coaching until the Halloween break.
