This will be the last Foundation Award we will run this year and place MUST be booked in advance by contacting Damien on the number below. There is a cost of €15 per person which covers both the Foundation and the Code of Ethics Courses – if someone previously completed the Code of Ethics Course and they bring their Cert to the first session the cost is €5.

The Code of Ethics Course in Longford Slashers is now booked out so we will continue to take names and if we get enough we will run another course in the weeks ahead. Again places on this new course will be limited and must be booked in advance by contact Damien with the names of the people who wish to attend as soon as possible. This course will cost €10 per person.

Schools Coaching

Schools’ coaching has taken on a different look as of last week as we commenced our program of Fundamentals with Junior and Senior infant kids from all school where those kids had not been taken from September to December. This program aims to provide all kids with the opportunity to participate in fun filled activities and games which will promote physical activity and improve all kids fundamental movement skills (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching, Passing, Kicking).

This program will run weekly for 8 weeks up until the Easter holidays and will be taking place in 21 schools. Due to Noels departure we will have to defer the rollout of our school coaching hurling program until a replacement is on board.

Our Indoor Hurling program continues to run weekly and will run until early March when the finals will take place. There are 16 schools fielding 38 teams taking part and all blitzes will take place in Newtownforbes Sports Complex – all schools have been notified of the first 3 rounds of fixtures.

Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. Thursday week the 26th will see the 1st year boys from Moyne CS attend. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they play for an hour and 45 minutes.

Halftime Games

Longford’s next home NFL game is against Waterford on Sunday 8th of March which means four more schools get to take part in the half time games. These games are open to 2nd – 4th class boys and girls with the games played at 11 a side. The four schools that have been selected for this round of games are as follows: St. Matthews Ballymahon, Cloonagh (Dring), Killeen and Melview. No doubt all these boys and girls will have an enjoyable day at the home of Longford GAA Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. Longford’s final home game is against Offaly on Sunday 29th March and the four schools taking part on that day are as follows: Aughnagarron, Bunlahy, Edgeworthstown and Scoil Mhuire Newtownforbes.

Teacher Trainer program

This week see the commencement of our Teacher Trainer Program in Ballymahon, Fermoyle and Newtowncashel National Schools. This program will run for 6 weeks between now and the Easter break. What this program entails is one of our coaches going into a school and up skilling 1 teacher so that they can in turn coach all kids within the school the fundamentals and the basic skills of Gaelic Football.

Development Squads

Last Friday night our U16 footballers had a meeting in Longford Slashers where management outlined their plans for the year and gave all the players their O’Neills football – it is expected that the strength od a lot of house gables will be tested in the weeks and months ahead. As this week is the midterm break within secondary schools we will be using this window to meet up with our U15 & U16 football squads and get the ball rolling for 2015. Details of these sessions and all sessions going forward will appear on the Longford GAA website as outlined below. Both our U15 and U16 football squads for 2016 have been selected and both panels are posted on the Development Squad section of under Coaching. As well as both squads there are also details of our U13 Skills School and dates for our U14 trials. Going forward all Development Squad player messages regarding Squad activities will be posted on this website and if you click into the Coaching/Development Squad section you will find all the updated information so players and parents please keep yourself informed.
