Schools’ coaching has taken on a different look as of last week as we commenced our program of Fundamentals with Junior and Senior infant kids from all school where those kids had not been taken from September to December. This program aims to provide all kids with the opportunity to participate in fun filled activities and games which will promote physical activity and improve all kids fundamental movement skills (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching, Passing, Kicking).
This program will run weekly for 8 weeks up until the Easter holidays and will be taking place in 21 schools. Due to Noels departure we will have to defer the rollout of our school coaching hurling program until a replacement is on board.
Our Indoor Hurling program continues to run weekly and will run until early March when the finals will take place. There are 16 schools fielding 38 teams taking part and all blitzes will take place in Newtownforbes Sports Complex – all schools have been notified of the first 3 rounds of fixtures.
Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. Thursday week the 26th will see the 1st year boys from Moyne CS attend. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they play for an hour and 45 minutes.
Longford’s next home NFL game is against Waterford on Sunday 8th of March which means four more schools get to take part in the half time games. The four schools that have been selected for this round of games are as follows: St. Matthews Ballymahon, Cloonagh (Dring), Killeen and Melview. Last Friday night our U16 footballers had a meeting in Longford Slashers where management outlined their plans for the year and gave all the players their O’Neills football – it is expected that the strength od a lot of house gables will be tested in the weeks and months ahead. As this week is the midterm break within secondary schools we will be using this window to meet up with our U15 & U16 football squads and get the ball rolling for 2015.
