Coaching & Games: 17th Nov 2014

To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section of the Longford GAA website where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly.

Award 1 Youth/Adult Coaches Course

Our Award 1 Youth/Adult coaches training course, which is the next, step on from the Foundation Award and is aimed at coaches working with players from U13 through to adults continues to run is St. Mels hall until 27th November. This is a very important course because in 2016 all adult teams must have a person qualified at Award 1 level involved on the management team. We had a great attendance with 19 coaches enrolled on the course, which will make it really enjoyable in the weeks ahead.

Underage Fixtures Forum

As part of “A Plan For Longford By Longford” an Underage (U12-Minor) Fixtures Forum was held in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park last Wednesday 12th of November. All clubs views were represented on the night with feedback given before the Forum or on the night. This review was overseen by an independent committee who have provided a report on the findings and suggestions to the Development Plan committee who will explore and consider all suggestions made and work towards implementing some of these changes in the years ahead.

Schools Coaching

Coaching for the second term has now recommenced again with the final 10 schools getting coached between now and Christmas. Coaching will be once a week for 6 weeks as we take 2-3 groups from each school with these groups coming from 1st – 4th classes.

Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. This Thursday will see the 1st and 2nd year Boys from Templemichael Community College in attendance. Next Thursday will see the 1st and 2nd year boys from Ard Scoil Granard attend. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they played for an hour and 45 minutes.

Teacher Trainer program

The first phase of our Teacher Trainer Program, run in 3 schools throughout the county, is now complete after 6 weeks of coaching and mentoring. This has turned out to be one of our most successful programs as all 3 teachers and schools have really bought into it and we look forward to our follow up visits in the weeks ahead and the rollout of the nursery program in the New Year. We also have another 3 schools lined up for this program from February on. What this program entailed was one of our coaches going into a school and up skilling 1 teacher so that they can in turn coach all kids within the school the fundamentals and the basic skills of Gaelic Football. All 3 teachers showed great enthusiasm and engagement in the program and we are really excited by the potential of this initiative in the years ahead.

Longford/Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps

Anyone who couldn’t make the collections in Ballymahon, Granard or Lanesboro can pick up their gear at the GAA offices in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park between Monday & Friday from 10 – 5:30. Again thanks to everyone for your patience during this process.

National Respect Exhibition Go Games

Our U-8 Indoor Football program has now being completed, over the past two months over 120 children have taken part in the program with over 30 blitzes taking place. Thanks to all the mentors and players for a very enjoyable and worthwhile run of events.
