Longford GAA Coaching & Games
To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section of the Longford Leader where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly.
As per contact from Damien all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the Club Underage secretaries’ address ONLY. Every Underage Section has their own secretaries address ad goes along the lines as follows: (firstname.lastname@example.org). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring this accounts and passing the information to the relevant people.
Club Underage Section Audits
As outlined at the 20/20 Club Information Night every Underage Section will be audited by the end of February by one of our 8 Club Facilitators. These facilitators are in the process of contacting Clubs to meet them so as to get back their completed questionnaire and advise on the next steps, which need to be taken.
Longford GAA Events Calendar
For 2016 we have introduced an Events Calendar on our website at http://longfordgaa.ie/cg-calendar/ This calendar contains everything a Longford GAA person might need to know from our full fixtures program to Club workshops to County Board meetings to National fixtures to other large sporting events so as everyone can see what’s happening in the weeks and months ahead. Any changes made will be updated on the calendar in real time and will constantly evolve as different scenarios arise. This should be people’s first port of call for information regarding Longford GAA events and a detailed schedule can even be printed off from the agenda heading.
Underage Club Workshops
As engagement with our workshops in recent years has been poor we have decided to put a comprehensive program in place where every Underage Section will receive three Workshops delivered within their own Club, for their own mentors and specific to their own Clubs needs. All these dates have been assigned and communicated to Clubs and can be found on the Calendar as outlined above. Every date is on a Monday or a Tuesday starting this week and running until the 28th of June.
Nutrition & Health Promotion
One of the workshops that is mandatory for all Clubs is our Parent & Child Nutrition & Health Promotion Workshop, which will be delivered by our Athlone IT Intern, and again these dates can be found on the events calendar.
Theresa started with us in mid January and has been visiting the primary schools of the County delivering a similar program to kids from 1st to 6th classes. It’s really amazing what kids know about the foods/drinks that are good and bad for them but unfortunately these kids don’t do the grocery shopping or make the lunch so maybe there is learning in that somewhere.
Hurling Development Officer
Longford and Leitrim GAA’s have combined once again but this time on the Hurling front as we are working together to share a Hurling Development Officer. Michael Carroll has been appointed to the position and is currently in our primary schools coaching the kids who are taking part in the Indoor Hurling competition. Michael has also met members of the four Hurling Clubs and agreed a plan of action to up skill coaches and run developmental programs to name just two.
Our primary schools Indoor Hurling Go Games resumes this week after the mid-term break as we enter round three. There are 37 teams representing 18 schools all of whom are fixtures to attend three blitz days. Based on results we will then have 7 finals in early March to conclude the program. We would then hope that these schools would take part in our outdoor hurling championship after the Easter holidays.
NFL Half Time Games
This Sunday sees Longford take on Kildare in round 3 of the Allianz National Football League in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park with throw in at 2pm. At half time in the game the boys and girls from Ardagh NS, Colehill NS, Gaelscoil NS and Killoe NS will take part in the mini games. The players will all be from classes’ 2nd to 4th as these games are used as an opportunity to play football for those kids who would not be playing schoolboy football. As always we thank CnamB and the schools themselves for their cooperation in running these games and we hope all the girls and boys enjoy the day with hopefully some favourable weather.
Code of Ethics
This week sees the second of our Code of Ethics courses take place. Our third date, which is the 9th of March, is now booked out so we have added a fourth date that is the 23rd of March. We will keep running courses as long as there is demand so if anyone is interested please call Lorraine on 043 3345 219 to put your name on the list for the next available place.
U12 Longford Leitrim Mini League
2016 will see the continuation of our link up with Leitrim GAA for our U12 Mini Leagues. This competition enters its 3rd year with places available for 10 Longford Clubs to join 10 Leitrim Clubs playing over 2 Divisions. An email has been sent to all Underage Secretaries requesting Clubs to express their interest in taking part for 2016.
Last Thursday seen the completion of our second Foundation Award as 20 more coaches finished the two-night course in Ardscoil Phadraig Hall Granard. They join the 22 from Drumlish Community Center in having now completed the course. This is currently the last plan course but if people are interested in doing the Award please contact Lorraine on the number below.
Our U14, U15 & U16 football development squads will all be in action in the coming weeks with functional screening taking place in Athlone IT and field based sessions in advance of their first matches. All information on our squads will be updated on our website at http://longfordgaa.ie/development-squad-news/ and clicking the relevant squad.
During mid-term we took our U14, U15 & U16 squads to St. Mels College for a 1 day camp where we had fabulous facilities and weather to match resulting in a very beneficial days work. Many thanks to all the coaches who continue to give of their time to develop these young men.
We held an elite coaches Workshop exclusively for all our football squad mentors last Saturday, again in St. Mels, which was delivered by external expert coaches/tutors. The workshop was really well received by the coaches and we will continue to ensure all our coaches get the best supports possible to assist in developing the next generation of Longford footballers.
