Coaching & Games: 23rd November 2015

To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly. 20/20 Communication As per contact from Damien all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the club secretaries’ address ONLY. There are two addresses per club, one for the adult club ( and one for the underage section ( It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring these accounts and passing the information to the relevant people. Club Development 20/20 Club Audit reports have been sent to the official GAA email address of all Underage and Adult Club secretaries. These reports have been drawn up based on the Clubs engagement with 20/20’s programs and initiatives and should be used as a basis to plan for 2016. Elements of the report can also be used to address issues at upcoming AGM’s. First Aid On Saturday last Longford GAA hosted a very successful First Aid course that was attended by the maximum numbers permitted as 12 people from 4 Clubs completed the workshop. This need for more trained First Aiders arose out of the questionnaire and SWOT Analysis sections of the Club Audits as nearly every Club highlighted this as an area that needed improvement. Congratulations to the 4 Clubs who had representatives in attendance and to those 14 or so other Clubs not represented it would be nice to know how you plan to address the problem of the lack of First Aiders if no one attends the courses..! Award 1 Youth/Adult Course This course concluded last Saturday as the 8th session was delivered. Engagement with the course was really good with coaches now completiting their log book for return by the end of the November so they can be assessed. 20 coaches completed the course and they represented 11 Clubs so congratulations and well done to all. This course is aimed at coaches of teams from U13 up to and including adults. This is a very important course as from 2016 all adult teams MUST have an Award 1 qualified coach involved with the team. Development Squads The U13 skills school squad had their last trial game on Thursday night last. These have been a great bunch of lads who have worked hard for the past few months. This panel will now be drawn up and will develop into the U14 squad for 2016. Clubs will be notified as to when the panel has been picked and will be on the Longford GAA website. On Monday last the U16 squad began their indoor athlete development work. Both the U15 and U16 squads will travel to AIT sports science centre on the 5th of December for a screening and testing day. Development Squad Mentors As part of “20/20 Vision For Longford”, Longford GAA are now looking to recruit mentors for our various Development Squads (U13, U14, U15 & U16) for the 2016 season. The role of mentor within our squad system is a very rewarding one and comes with great responsibility, as you will help mold Longford’s footballers of the future. All our squad mentors are facilitated with up skilling courses and involved in a program of continuous learning. All mentors will receive Longford gear and will be supported by Coaching & Games regarding planning and logistics. If you are interested please make contact with Damien at or 087 912 6556 Schools Programs There are only two weeks remaining in our third and final Urban Schools program as four schools are coached and invited to after school indoor football. This Friday we will hold blitzes 17 and 18 of our 2nd, 3rd and 4th class blitzes in Colmcille GAA and Legan. Friday will see the blitz involve Colmcille and Killeen National schools in Colmcille with Colehill and Tashinny National schools attending Legan. These blitzes will run until the 11th of December and that will be the end of what was a 10 week program as multiple blitzes took place each Fridays resulting in a total of 22 blitzes involving 1500+ kids. This program would not be possible without the assistance of 4 TY students from both Cnoc Mhuire & St. Mels as they complete a 10 day work placement with us. Our primary schools have also been advised of a nutrition and health promotion workshop that we are offering to schools after Christmas and schools have been invited to request this program if they are interested. 19 of our 38 schools have requested the program with the schedule almost full so if interested contact should be made as soon as possible. Our program of 1st year Pella continues on Thursday’s. The final Post Primary outdoor date will take place on December 10th as we host our 11 a side finals day. December 9th will see us host a girls U14 blitz involving 4 longford schools. This blitz will be used to assist the schools in preparation for their competition after Christmas.
