Development Squads

Our U13 Football Skills School was a great success this year with over 80 players taking part. On conclusion of the program a panel was formed of 60 players who will play their Sligo counterparts this Thursday in 3 different challenge games. All details will be on www.longfordgaa.ie

The Paul Barden U16 Development Squad Tournament had its second night of football with wins for The Hogans over Cusacks and The Davins over The Blue and Golds. The remaining games will be played after the midterm on Monday 2nd and the Final on Thursday 5th of November.

The U14 development squad tournament finished up last week. The first game was a play off between the Midlanders and the O Farrells. It was a very tight game with the Midlanders winning by one point. The B final ended up with a victory for the O Farrells over the Pearses by 5 points. The final was battled out between the Shannonsiders and the Midlanders with a very close first half but the Shannonsiders pulled away in the second half with two goals. Reece Leonard was the player of the tournament with 4 brilliant displays. The winning team received a specially made jersey and all other players got a Longford GAA beanie hat. Huge thanks to the coaches for working with the teams during the tournament. The 4 weeks of games were very worthwhile and gave the chance to nearly 70 players to play a high standard of football. The panel will be picked over the coming days and will be put on www.longfordgaa.ie . As with all our panels they remain open ended and the squad mentors will keep an eye on club matches and additional players will be called up if merited. Likewise players not committing to the panel will be replaced.

Development Squad Mentors

As part of “20/20 Vision For Longford”, Longford GAA are now looking to recruit mentors for our various Development Squads (U13, U14, U15 & U16) for the 2016 season. The role of mentor within our squad system is a very rewarding one and comes with great responsibility, as you will help mold Longford’s footballers of the future. All our squad mentors are facilitated with up skilling courses and involved in a program of continuous learning. All mentors will receive Longford gear and will be supported by Coaching & Games regarding planning and logistics. If you are interested please make contact with Damien at damien.sheridan.gda.longford@gaa.ie or 087 912 6556

Club Development

As the playing year winds down and preparation is in place for 2016 reports are being drawn up for all clubs and will be sent to secretaries in time of AGM’s.

Schools Programs

Our urban program is now entering the final week in the Longford town area. The program involves primary school coaching in five schools as well as two evenings of indoor football in St. Mels College Sports Hall. This program will have run for four weeks in total before we cover the remaining two Templemichael schools and cover the Ballymahon Urban area.

Last Friday we held blitz seven and eight of our 2nd, 3rd and 4th class blitzes which will run for 10 Fridays in total as we will run 24 blitzes involving 1500+ kids. This program would not be possible without the assistance of 4 TY students from both Cnoc Mhuire & St. Mels as they complete a 10 day work placement with us. The full schedule has been sent to all schools and is 95% full with only one space for a school with small numbers in the north Longford area left. Friday after the midterm will see the blitz involve Newtownforbes, Drumlish & Melview national schools attend two separate blitzes in Clonguish GAA Grounds.

Our program of Pella continues on Thursday’s as last week the girls from Moyne CS attended with 1st & 2nd years in Edgeworthstown Sports Hall. Thursday the 12th will see the boys from Ardscoil Phadraig take part.

Thursday the 5th will see us hold our second 7 a side blitz of the year as schools have been invited to attend Glennon Brothers Pearse Park for one of two 8 team blitzes.

December 9th will see us host a girls U14 blitz involving 5 longford schools. This blitz will be used to assist the schools in preperation for their competition after Christmas.
