Coaching & Games: 29th Sep 2014

To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section of the Longford Leader where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly. Award 1 Youth/Adult Coaches Course On the 16th of October we start our Award 1 Youth/Adult coaches training course, this is the next step on from the Foundation Award and is aimed at coaches working with players from U13 through to adults. This is a very important course because in 2016 all adult teams must have a person qualified at Award 1 level involved on the management team. Places on this course are limited so please contact Damien on the number below for more information or to book your place. Schools Coaching Our coaches have been in contact with all schools to agree slots for coaching between now and Christmas and coaching commenced last week. In our primary schools coaching will be once a week for 6 weeks as we take 2-3 groups from each school with these groups coming from 1st – 4th classes. On Friday last the first Leinster 1st year football blitz take place in Mostrim GAA grounds as teams from Ard Scoil Phadraig, Ballymahon VS, Cnoc Mhuire X 2 & St. Mels attended. The second of these blitzes will take place on the 22nd of October, which is the week of the Halloween break. Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. Last week seen the girls from Scoil Mhuire Longford take part and this Thursday the 1st and 2nd year boys from Lanesboro CC will be in attendance. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they played for an hour and 45 minutes. Teacher Trainer Program Our Teacher Trainer Program continues to run in 3 schools throughout the county. What this program entails is one of our coaches going into a school and up skilling 1 teacher so that they can in turn coach all kids within the school the fundamentals and the basic skills of Gaelic Football. All 3 teachers have shown great enthusiasm and engagement in the program and we are really excited by the potential of this initiative. We have already 3 more schools booked in for the New Year and we hope that this can become a useful model in years to come. Half Times Games Last Sunday during the Intermediate Final 16 boys and girls from Carrick Sarsfields and Clonbroney took part in two mini games during the half time interval as well a forming a guard of honor for both teams as they entered the field prior to the game. This Sunday will see the kids from Cloonagh NS and Killoe NS take part in similar activities on the biggest day in Longford Club football. Prior to the football final the hurling Final will take place and again kids from Clonguish Óg and Wolfe Tones Óg will take part in the half time games. This is a great opportunity for these kids to play in front of a large crowd and no doubt they will all enjoy the experience. Longford/Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps Finally the remaining backpacks form the Lanesboro camp have arrived and I will be sending a text to all parents this week regarding arrangements for collection. National Respect Exhibition Go Games Our U8 indoor football program is commencing this Wednesday and will run for the next 6 weeks. Go Games Mini League U12’s Finals The curtain came down for a number of our clubs season on Saturday last , when the first of our 5 finals were played in perfect conditions in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. Southern Gaels and Gratten Gaels started of proceedings in the Div 2 Plate final and despite the best efforts of the Gratten’s lads Southern Gaels emerged victorious on a scoreline of 9-07 to 1-08 . Our second game featured Ballymahon Forgney Gaels and St. Francis who were contesting the Div 2 Shield final and in what was a much closer affair the north Longford side came out on top in the final 10 mins to win on a scoreline of 4-09 to 1-03. In both the above games an extra 10 minutes was played, after the official time, which gave all subs meaningful game time in our county ground. The final game of the day was for the Div 1 Cup and was contested between Longford Slashers and Shannon Gaels in which Slashers emerged victorious on a score line of 2-06 to 0-10 in what was a hugely exciting game with the result in doubt up to the final whistle. This game was of a very high standard and testament to the work done by the coaches on both sides. Shannon Gaels had started the year along with Northern Gaels in our Div 2 competition and as the season progressed both clubs looked to be accommodated in Div 1 if possible, the play offs allowed us to do so and Shannon Gaels qualified for the final. At the end of each final all players from both teams were introduced to the crowd and presented with their medal. Our two outstanding finals the Div 1 Shield Final between St. Patrick’s Óg and Killoe Óg took place last Monday night (after these notes were submitted) and the Div 2 Cup Final between Shannon Gaels and Northern Gaels will be played over the coming week. Development Squads This week sees notification go out to all players who have been invited to take part in our U14 and U16 Regional tournments which will be commencing in the coming weeks. These blitzes are for players who are in their last year at U13 level but if clubs need a couple extra players they should bring U14 players who got little football during the year but under no circumstances are U12’s allowed to play.
