Coaching & Games: 2nd March 2015

To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly. Leinster U21 Football Championship This Wednesday night he 4th sees Longford’s campaign in the Leinster U21 football championship continue as they take on Louth in Cashel GAA Club at 7:30. We in C & G would again like to wish Frank and the team the very best of good luck in the game and throughout their campaign. Please see game preview elsewhere in this paper.  20/20 Communication As per contact from Damien recently all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the club secretaries’ address ONLY. There are two addresses per club, one for the adult club (secretary.clubname.longford@gaa.ie) and one for the underage section (secretarybng.clubname.longford@gaa.ie). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring these accounts and passing the information to the relevant people. 20/20 Vision For Longford Last Thursday we held the first session in our Award 1 Youth program where 40 coaches representing 6 clubs attended. This was a hugely encouraging turnout with great enthusiasm amongst the group. Also in attendance on the night were Michael Reynolds CEO and Shane Flanagan Games Manager of Leinster GAA who are backing this program, as Longford are the pilot for 2015. The one massive disappointment was the complete no show from one club with no notice or reason given. The second and subsequent sessions for the clubs who attended on Thursday night will all take place within the club setting and involve a team from within the clubs for the practical elements. Our careers advise service for our County footballers who are doing the Leaving Cert this summer continues this week with their second group meeting, players are now encouraged to contact Damien on the number below to arrange an individual meeting in the weeks ahead. We are in the process of making contact with all 19 Underage Sections about arranging the meeting with our Club Facilitators so as to go through your Club Questionnaires. Last Tuesday seen 17 coaches complete the Foundation Award at a course in St. Mels College Gym and on Saturday last 15 coaches completed a Dual Hurling/Football course in Kenagh Sports Hall. There will be no more Foundation Award’s run this year as none of the three courses booked out. On Monday the 2nd we held a very well attended Code of Ethics Course in Longford Slashers. We have an additional two courses booked due to the demand with both courses almost booked out. These two additional courses will be the last courses we will be running so it is advisable to contact Damien ASAP to book your place as walkups will not be accepted. This course will cost €10 per person. Schools Coaching We continue to roll out our program of Fundamentals with Junior and Senior infant kids from all school where those kids had not been taken from September to December. This program aims to provide all kids with the opportunity to participate in fun filled activities and games which will promote physical activity and improve all kids fundamental movement skills (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching, Passing, Kicking). This program will run weekly for 8 weeks up until the Easter holidays and will be taking place in 21 schools. We hope to be in a position to appoint a Hurling coach in the following week and this person will get straight to work within the schools and clubs of the county. Our Indoor Hurling program has reached the finals stage with seven finals scheduled to take place this Friday the 6th, see below for details: 4pm Div 7 Ballinalee 2 V Melview 2 4:15pm Div 6 Colmcille V Killoe 4 4:30pm Div 5 Cloonagh (Dring) V Aughnagarron 3 4:45pm Div 4 Melview 1 V Colehill 1 5pm Div 3 Newtownforbes 2 V Killoe 2 5:15pm Div 2 Newtownforbes 1 V Ballinalee 1 5:30pm Div 1 Killoe 1 V Abbeylara 1 This has proved to be a really enjoyable and well-attended competition where 16 schools fielded 38 teams with in excess of 260 kids taking part over the last four weeks. Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. This Thursday the 5th will see the 1st year girls from Cnoc Mhuire Granard attend. Next Thursday the 12th March will see the 1st year Girls from Scoil Mhuire Longford attend. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they play for an hour and 45 minutes. Halftime Games Longford’s next home NFL game is against Waterford this Sunday 8th of March which means four more schools get to take part in the half time games. These games are open to 2nd – 4th class boys and girls with the games played at 11 a side. The four schools that have been selected for this round of games are as follows: St. Matthews Ballymahon, Cloonagh (Dring), Killeen and Melview. No doubt all these boys and girls will have an enjoyable day at the home of Longford GAA Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. Longford’s final home game is against Offaly on Sunday 29th March and the four schools taking part on that day are as follows: Aughnagarron, Bunlahy, Edgeworthstown and Scoil Mhuire Newtownforbes. Teacher Trainer program Our Teacher Trainer Program in Ballymahon, Fermoyle and Newtowncashel National Schools continues to run this week. This program will run for 6 weeks from early February until the Easter break. What this program entails is one of our coaches going into a school and up skilling 1 teacher so that they can in turn coach all kids within the school the fundamentals and the basic skills of Gaelic Football. Development Squads Our U16 football development squad started their athlete development program in the county gym last Thursday. They will do three sessions over the next three weeks and will then be giving a program to do at home. The U15 squad will start their program of 3 session from Monday next. Details of these sessions and all sessions going forward will appear on the Longford GAA website as outlined below. Both our U15 and U16 football squads for 2016 have been selected and both panels are posted on the Development Squad section of www.longfordgaa.ie under Coaching. As well as both squads there are also details of our U13 Skills School and dates for our U14 trials. Going forward all Development Squad player messages regarding Squad activities will be posted on this website and if you click into the Coaching/Development Squad section you will find all the updated information so players and parents please keep yourself informed.
