Elite Player Development Bursary Program
This Saturday the 10th sees seven EPD players get presented with their bursary, which was an initiative under the 20/20 Vision For Longford Development Plan. This presentation night will be a very special occasion for these players and their loved ones as well as those people who have helped form and shape these young men. This is the first year of this scheme and no doubt this will have a very positive impact on these 7 lands and their families – all concerned should be very proud of themselves. Each bursary is worth €750.
All members of the EPD program were informed of this initiative since early September with those eligible to apply having to have their applications in by the beginning of October. The application process was very robust and involved reports and feedback from the student’s college course heads and college GAA managers as well as attendance at EPD sessions (all things the individual was in control of themselves). The standard of applicant was very high and the support for this initiative has grown in recent weeks with many businesses expressing an interest in supporting the program in the years ahead which is excellent news for any player who strives to be an Elite player for Longford on the field while working hard to achieve educational qualifications off the field.
U13 Skill School V Sligo
Last Saturday we had 40+ lads travel to the Sligo GAA Center of Excellence to play the hosts in a 4-team blitz where both Counties fielded two teams each. On a beautifully mild day for football every boy got good playing time between his teams two matches. This day capped off what has been a super 6 months of development for these lads from they started out at the U13 Regional Tournament and progressed through the summer skill school and the 9 a side competition in autumn. They will now break until early in the New Year when the U14 panel for 2017 will be formed.
Our indoor hurling program for kids of 2nd – 4th classes continued last week with Abbeylara, Stonepark & Ballymahon primary schools all in attendance. These blitzes will conclude this Friday for the Christmas break and will resume again in the New Year along with the indoor Hurling Competitions for the older kids in the schools. As part of partaking in these blitz days Kathlyn will also be visiting those schools and taking coaching sessions with those kids who will be participating. Again the demand for a program like this shows the interest there is for hurling within our primary schools and Kathlyn looks forward to harnessing this in the months ahead.
Our Primary football blitzes concludes this Friday as the kids from Drumlish NS round out what has been an excellent program of activity. Last Friday we were in Mostrim where St. Colmcilles, Lenamore, Colehill & Edgeworthstown schools were all in attendance. This will be week 10 of 10 in the program. 10 TY students from St. Mels (6) and Cnoc Mhuire (4) help organise the blitzes and then manage a team each while also refereeing the games.
Longford GAA Master Fixtures & Events Calendar
There is a link on our website which allows anyone to download our Masters Fixtures document as any time. This document is the template for the Official Fixtures that the Secretary distributes weekly but is not considered as Official notification of Fixtures if downloaded as only fixtures sent from the County Secretary can be considered Official. This should be people’s first port of call for information regarding Longford GAA events.
We also have an Events Calendar on our website at http://longfordgaa.ie/cg-calendar/ This calendar contains everything a Longford GAA person might need to know from our full fixtures program to Club workshops to County Board meetings to National fixtures to other large sporting events so as everyone can see what’s happening in the weeks and months ahead. Any changes made will be updated on the calendar in real time and will constantly evolve as different scenarios arise.
