Coaching & Games: 6th April 2015

To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section  where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly. Division 4 Promotion  Congratulations to the Longford senior footballers on ending their NFL campaign undefeated as they had a very impressive win away to Carlow last Sunday and it goes to show the strength in the panel when they can win so comprehensively having made 11 changes from the previous week. As well as promotion Longford also book their place in the Division 4 final in Croke Park on Saturday the 25th when it will be the first of the two finals on the night. 20/20 Communication As per contact from Damien recently all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the club secretaries’ address ONLY. There are two addresses per club, one for the adult club (secretary.clubname.longford@gaa.ie) and one for the underage section (secretarybng.clubname.longford@gaa.ie). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring these accounts and passing the information to the relevant people. 20/20 Vision For Longford Coaching Workshops Concussion Awareness Workshop On Monday next the 13th April we will be holding a Concussion Awareness Workshop in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park commencing at 7:30pm. Places on the workshop are free of charge but must be booked by texting the names to Damien on the number below. An Intercounty Doctor will deliver this workshop and a large number of relevant resources will be made available on the night. Concussion is a very serious issue within all contact sports and we in the GAA are being proactive in providing information and knowledge to all our members as to how concussions can occur, what are the dangers of getting concussed, how to manage those who get concussed and to highlight who needs to take responsibility for the care of someone who is or is suspected of being concussed. This workshop should be attended by a large number of people from all Clubs from Adult level to Child level. Some examples of the type of people who need to be aware of this information are as follows; team trainers/managers, players, club officials, parents, match officials, club medical personnel, regular match goers, etc. National Respect Go Games Week On Saturday last we held our first go Games blitz of the season. Unfortunately 5 clubs were unable to attend but we still had almost 200 kids attended one of three U10 blitzes in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. We had a great day weather wise and all the kids in attendance really enjoyed their football. A huge thanks in no small way must go to the referees who officiated the games and gave both players and team mentors an idea of the areas that they must continue to work on in their coaching sessions. The day was capped off by the attendance of 12 of our county footballers that mixed with the kids and posed for photographs, signed autographs and interacted with the kids between their games. Go Games Information Night On Wednesday last the 1st we held our Go Games Information night, which was attended by all bar 2 clubs. We went through the fixtures for all U8 & U10 blitzes for the season (see up to date fixtures below) as well as further details on our U12 mini leagues and U13 competition. Schools Coaching As schools are on their Easter break our schools coaching will recommence on Monday 13th of April when we roll out our Urban specific program. This program is designed to get more kids in the Templemichael area participating within the GAA and getting greater engagement between parents and the local clubs. As part of this program Longford GAA have developed three phases, the first phase will be sending coaches into all 7 town schools each week for a 5 week period to coach kids within their classes. The second phase will include a schools blitz every Wednesday in St. Mels College where schools can bring a class of kids and we will break them down into small sided teams and with the help of TY students who will act as team managers and referees. The third phase is a club specific program, which the finer details still have to be agreed by the clubs concerned. Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year is drawing to a close with just three days left. Thursday the 16th April will see the boys from Templemichael attend and to cap of the Pella program for the year we will have our 1st year girls finals on the 23rd and our 1st year boys finals on the 30th. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they play for an hour and 45 minutes. Development Squads Our U14 football trials are now complete and the selected panel are on the Longford GAA website. Damien is conducting a coaching session for all Goalkeepers who attended the trials as well as inviting those outfield players who failed to make the panel into the session if they wish to be considered as a goalkeeper. The U14 squad and the Goalkeeping session will take place in Clonguish GAA grounds this Tuesday at 10am. The full group will return again on Wednesday where they will undergo their physical screening day in Longford GAA gym on the Athlone Road opposite the Mega Bowl. Both our U15 & U16 footballers will attend Easter camps this week and all details are on the Longford GAA website. Our U15 football squad had a great run out against Leitrim in Clonguish last Saturday and after a slow start Longford grew into the game and ran out winners. Our U16 football squad will play Roscommon in Rathcline on Saturday the 25th in another challenge and will have a number of skill sessions in the weeks ahead. On a disappointing note for all concerned Karl Dermody has had to step away fro the U16 group due to personal commitments and we in Longford C&G and on behalf of the U16 panel would like to thank Karl sincerely for all the hard work he has put into this group since 2013 and for having a management team in place that can continue on in his absence with little disruption as Conan Casey takes over and we would like to wish Conan well for the season. All updated development squad news can be got on the Longford GAA website at http://longfordgaa.ie/development-squad-news/ Kelloggs GAA Cúl Camp Dates We are not even out of winter and we are already planning for the long hot days of summer but when you cater for 90,000 kids over 8 weeks preperation has to begin this early.
