Coaching & Games: 9th February 2015

To keep in touch with everything on a weekly basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly.

20/20 Communication

As per contact from Damien recently all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the club secretaries address ONLY. There are two addresses per club, one for the adult club (secretary.clubname.longford@gaa.ie) and one for the underage section (secretarybng.clubname.longford@gaa.ie). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring these accounts and passing the information to the relevant people.

20/20 Vision For Longford

Last Friday seen the deadline pass for the submission of the application forms for the Award 1 Coaching Course and the completion of the Club Questionnaire. The six lucky Clubs who were selected are as follows: Ballymahon Forgney Gaels, Granard, Grattan Gaels, Killoe Óg, Longford Slashers and Wolfe Tones Óg. All of these clubs have shown good levels of Club development in recent years and presented a proposal of how this course will benefit the Club going forward. They also displayed an understanding of where the program was aimed at and stayed within these parameters with their proposal. Within the next week contact with be made with all 19 Underage Sections about arranging the meeting with our Club Facilitators so as to go through your Club Questionnaires.

We have 2 Foundation Courses fixed for the coming weeks and these will be the only two courses that will be run this year. The first course takes place this Saturday 14th of February in Edgeworthstown Community Campus (behind the Primary School) and will run from 10am to 4pm. The second course will run over two nights in St. Mels College Sports Hall on Wednesday the 18th and Tuesday the 24th of February from 7pm to 10pm each night. There is a cost of €15 per person which covers both the Foundation and the Code of Ethics Courses – if someone previously completed the Code of Ethics Course and they bring their Cert to the first session the cost is €5.

We will be hosting the Code of Ethics Course in Longford Slashers on Monday 2nd of March from 7pm to 10pm. Places on this course are limited and must be booked in advance by contact Damien with the names of the people who wish to attend as soon as possible. This course will cost €10 per person which is payable on the night.

22 coaches took part in our School Club Link training night that took place in St. Mels College on Monday the 2nd. This was a very beneficial night with a lot of enthusiastic coaches and we hope that everyone can now get active within their local school and encourage these kids to attend your Clubs on a regular basis. The SCL is a program that has struggled to be implemented in a lot of Clubs in recent years so it was great to see a much stronger interest this year and Longford C&G will now continue to work with these coaches as they go about the roll out of their coaching sessions within their local schools between now and the summer.

Schools Coaching

Schools’ coaching has taken on a different look as of last week as we commenced our program of Fundamentals with Junior and Senior infant kids from all school where those kids had not been taken from September to December. This program aims to provide all kids with the opportunity to participate in fun filled activities and games which will promote physical activity and improve all kids fundamental movement skills (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching, Passing, Kicking).

This program will run weekly for 8 weeks up until the Easter holidays and will be taking place in 21 schools. Unfortunately Noel Conaty is leaving us to take up a full time position within his field of study. It has been great having Noel on board for the last few years and we would like to thank him for all the good work he has done and wish him well in the future. Due to this sudden change we will have to defer the rollout of our school coaching hurling program until a replacement is on board.

Last week seen the start of our Indoor Hurling program that will run for the month of February. There are 16 schools fielding 38 teams taking part and all blitzes will take place in Newtownforbes Sports Complex – all schools have been notified of the first 3 rounds of fixtures.

Our Post Primary Pella program for the school year continues to run every week. This Thursday will see the 1st year boys from Ballymahon Vocational School in attendance. Last week a group from Ardscoil Phadraig was in attendance. Thursday week the 26th will see the 1st year boys from Moyne CS attend. All of these blitzes take place in Edgeworthstown Community Campus where they play for an hour and 45 minutes.

Halftime Games

Last Sunday at half time in the AFL Round 2 game between Longford and Antrim in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park a group of kids from 3rd/4th class from four National Schools took part in a mini game. Each school was entitled to bring 11 kids but unfortunately two of the schools only had 6 and 7 kids due to other activities. As these games are always enjoyable for the kids and much sought after it is disappointing that 9 kids lost out due to others not attending. The four schools in attendance were Ardagh, Cloontagh, Glen and Killoe National Schools and well done to all who were in attendance.

Teacher Trainer program

This week see the commencement of our Teacher Trainer Program in Ballymahon, Fermoyle and Newtowncashel National Schools. This program will run for 6 weeks between now and the Easter break. What this program entails is one of our coaches going into a school and up skilling 1 teacher so that they can in turn coach all kids within the school the fundamentals and the basic skills of Gaelic Football.

Development Squads

With the Midterm break approaching we will be using this window to meet up with our U15 & U16 football squads and get the ball rolling for 2015. Details of these sessions and all sessions going forward will appear on the Longford GAA website as outlined below. Both our U15 and U16 football squads for 2016 have been selected and both panels are posted on the Development Squad section of www.longfordgaa.ie under Coaching. As well as both squads there are also details of our U13 Skills School and dates for our U14 trials. Going forward all Development Squad player messages regarding Squad activities will be posted on this website and if you click into the Coaching/Development Squad section you will find all the updated information so players and parents please keep yourself informed.
