Minors play Laois this Saturday in Leinster Championship

With the end of the senior inter-county leagues in sight, it’s that time of year again, when the focus very definitely switches to under-age inter-county action. For Longford, this means the commencement of the Leinster Minor Championship.

For the second year in succession, Longford have been drawn to meet Laois in the first round. Last year, Longford became the giant-killers, when overcoming a much fancied O’Moore County team that contained amongst others, Donie Kingston and Kieran Lillis.

This year’s crop will be hoping to emulate the feats of last year and can get the year off to a fantastic start by overcoming the challenge Laois pose on Saturday.

Six of last year’s losing team remain part of the current set up (James Finn, Ruairí O'Connor, Brian McAuley, James Bolton, Sean George and Ciaran Delaney), all of whom will be looking to avenge last years defeat.

However, it is a relatively young Laois side that will take to Pearse Park, with half the panel available for selection again next year.

Longford have prepared diligently over the past while, and taken part in some useful challenge games against Down, Cavan and Leitrim amongst others and will be hoping to make it successive defeats for the Laois minors on Pearse Park.

If they beat Laois on Saturday, they will face either Louth or Dublin away on 23rd May in the Leinster Quarter-Final. However, should they lose, a second chance comes by way of a qualifier game against the losers of Meath or Offaly. Should that scenario materialize, the game will be played on 25th April in Pearse Park.

We wish manager Ciaran Fox, Selectors Martin Mulleady, Albert Fallon, Kevin Hughes, support staff of Barry Mollaghan and Padraig Croughan and the entire Minor panel the very best of luck.

The game will take place in Pearse Park this Saturday 18th April at 3pm, and hopefully there will be a large crowd present to lend their support to the lads on the day.

U-14 Leagues

These Leagues commence this Tuesday evening 14th April. Following a meeting last Wednesday night, it was confirmed that TWO PLAYS of the ball only will be allowed across play in all the u-14 leagues. All clubs should have received the email about this and are asked to duly notify their U-14 mentors. Referees have also been notified.
