IFC Final: Sean Connollys & Carrickedmond must replay

Carrickedmond 0-07, Sean Connolly’s 0-07

By Deniese O’Flaherty For the second year in a row the Intermediate Final went to a replay after a superb point from Sean Connolly’s midfielder Stephen Lynch earned his side a draw. In a poor game that didn’t come to life until the final minutes the sides were level on six different occasions. Carrickedmond will feel disappointed that they didn’t claim the victory having dominated the game but credit to Connolly’s who never gave up and were actually ahead by just one point with five minutes of the game remaining. A wonderful point from Connolly’s forward Dessie Reynolds opened the scoring in the second minute. Carrickedmond had a goal chance two minutes later but Mark McDonnell’s low shot went wide. They opened their account one minute later with a free from John Burns. Two points in a minute put them ahead by two in the 18th minute but then we had to wait 10 more minutes before there was another score; Reynolds with a lovely point in the 28th minute. Connolly’s drew level just before the break to leave the score; 0-03 to 0-03. A free from McDonnell put Carrickedmond ahead again in the 34th minute and Burns was unlucky not to get a touch on Marty Mulvey’s ball in, in the 38th minute. Down the other end Garret Higgins pulled off an excellent save to keep his goal intact and to deny Reynolds. One minute later substitute Joe Heaney leveled matters again. Carrickedmond enjoyed a spell of possession but were wasteful in front of the posts. Another McDonnell free in the 52nd minute put them back in front in the 52nd minute but two fantastic points from Reynolds edged Connolly’s ahead in the 55th minute. A ’45 from Higgins in the 58th minute was caught on the line by Thomas Keogh, the clearance fell to Barry O’Farrell who fired it over the bar to level the game. Padraig McGrath then put Carrickedmond ahead in the 59th minute. But credit to Connolly’s they never gave up and in the 60th minute Stephen Lynch fired over an exceptional point to earn his side a replay.
