Kehoe Cup: Success For Longford Hurlers

Longford 2-14 Louth 2-07

Longford hurlers made a winning start to 2015 when they had seven points to spare over Louth in the opening game of the Kehoe Cup in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday afternoon. It was a very good performance from Longford who controlled the game from start to finish. Louth did draw level in the 49th minute but Longford were able to pull clear near the end.

Longford made a good start to the game with Eoin Donnellan hitting over three early points; one from play, a free and a ’65. Louth’s first point came from a Paddy Lynch free. Keelan Cox and Donnellan (two) fired over points for Longford before Lynch was on target again with another free in the 18th minute. Points from Donnellan (’65) and Cathal Mullane put Longford ahead by six in the 28th minute.

One minute later Louth found the back of the net through Óisín Drumm and another free from Lynch cut Longford’s lead to two going in at the break. Donnellan got the opening point of the second half in the 38th minute but three unanswered points from Louth levelled the game in the 49th minute. Longford replied with two good points from substitute Joe O’Brien.

Pointed frees were then traded between Donnellan and substitute David Mahony to put just two between them again in the 63rd minute. Longford’s lead was five points in the 66th minute; Cathal Mullane’s shot came off the crossbar and John Mulhern finished to the net. But two minutes later Louth were back to within two of Longford when Drumm got his second goal of the game.

Despite the goal Louth couldn’t eat into Longford’s lead as the home side finished the game well. Donnellan got his 9th point of the game from a free in the 68th minute before Mulhern got his second goal of the game in stoppage time and he added a point just before the final whistle.
