Killoe Young Emmets 2-11, Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s 0-10
by Deniese O’Flaherty
Killoe Young Emmets justified the favourites tag as they claimed their second Longford Senior Football title in three years against St. Columba’s who were playing in their first final in 62 years.
The damage was done in the first half when with the aid of a strong wind the Killoe side blitzed their opponents. They were very much in control and grabbed their first goal in the 23rd minute when Denis McGoldrick finished off a lovely move involving Mark Hughes and Daniel Mimnagh.
Minutes later substitute Larry Moran found the back of the net with an excellent strike from a tight angle. Columba’s found the going to get scores and just hit over four in that opening half.
Columba’s hit over the opening two points after the break but failed to add on further scores despite enjoying a lot of possession. After 19 minutes of play Emmet Og got their first point of the second half and it could’ve been another goal with Moran’s effort just going over the bar.
There was six points in it in the 53rd minute when JJ Matthews pointed but that was that closest Columba’s were to get to Emmet Og as the Killoe side ended the game with two more points. Kevin Mulligan scored the last point of the game in stoppage time as Columba’s fell to a disappointing seven point defeat.Killoe: S Coy; C Farrelly, D Bennett, D Keogh; S Dowd (0-1), J McCormack, M Quinn; P Thompson (0-1), S Kiernan (0-1); D McGoldrick (1-2,1f), R McGoldrick, E Clarke; D Mimnagh (0-2), S McCormack (0-2,1f), M Hughes.
