Longford off to winning start in Lory Meagher Cup

Longford 0-12 Leitrim 0-09

Eoin Donnellan hit over 10 points as Longford started off their Lory Meagher campaign with a three point win over neighbours Leitrim in Carrick on Shannon on Saturday.

In a poor first half scores from play were at a premium. Donnellan was very much Longford’s main man scoring all four of their points in the opening half; two from frees and two from play. Clement Cunniffe and Padraig O’Donnell pointed two frees apiece for the Leitrim men to leave the sides level at the break – 0-04 to 0-04.

Leitrim’s first point from play came one minute into the 2nd half through Cunniffe. Points from Johnny Casey and Eoin Donnellan put Longford back in front in the 38th minute before O’Donnell drew the sides level again in the 43rd minute.

Three frees in a row from Donnellan gave Longford a three point lead in the 48th minute. But frees from Cunniffe and O’Donnell cut the gap to just one in the 58th minute. Two minutes later O’Donnell levelled proceedings again Donnellan edged Longford ahead again in the 61st minute with a good point from play. Casey put two between them in the 68th minute with his second point of the game. In stoppage time Donnellan hit over another free to leave three points in it at the end.
