SFC Semi Final: Clonguish v St. Columba’s

St. Columba’s 2-09; Clonguish 2-08 By Deniese O’Flaherty St. Columba’s reached the final of the Longford SFC for the first time since 1952 with a one point win over Clonguish. It’s a remarkable achievement for Columba’s who are just half a parish; the other half is Gowna in Co. Cavan. They deserved the win but Clonguish squandered chances near the end to force a replay. Clonguish made a great start to the game and lead 1-1 to no score in the 14th minute; the goal from Darren Quinn. Columba’s opening score didn’t come until the 23rd minute and in the 27th minute they went in front when Aidan McElligott found the back of the net. Two minutes later James McGivney’s spectacular effort ended up in the net and his younger brother followed up with a point to give them a five point lead at the break. Points were exchanged between McGivney (free) and Ciaran Williams in the opening minutes of the second half before Columba’s took control again. They were ahead by eight in the 37th minute with points from JJ and Jayson Matthews and a good effort from John Keegan. Sub Kevin Burke gave Clonguish hope when he grabbed a goal in the 39th minute. Entering the final 10 minutes Columba’s were ahead by four but Clonguish made for a nervy finish when they got to within one point of them. They had chances in the stoppage time to level but just couldn’t get that elusive point as Columba’s held on to meet Emmet Og in the final.
