U21’s Through to Provincial Q-Final meeting with Louth

Longford 4-13 Wicklow 1-05

It was all too easy for Longford as they swept aside the weak challenge of Wicklow in their opening Leinster U21 Championship game.

Longford led by seven at the break and within minutes of the second half extended that lead to 10 when they grabbed a second goal. In the space of four minutes they added two more goals. Wicklow just couldn’t cope with them although they did get a consolation goal seven minutes from time through corner forward Marc Lennon.

After going behind to a point from Thomas Donohoe in the second minute Longford got their opening score in the fifth minute when Larry Moran pointed over a free, Shane Kenny hit over another free before Moran scored Longford’s first goal in the 10th minute capitalising on a mistake by Wicklow keeper Andy Murphy.

Wicklow only scored three points in the first half; David Boothman (two frees) and Thomas Donohoe. While points from Dessie Reynolds, Paddy Kiernan, Andrew Dalton and two from Moran (one free) put Longford in a good position going in at the break.

Longford got a second goal in the 34th minute when corner back Conor Shields got up to shoot past Murphy. Seven minutes later they raised the flag again when Liam Connerton passed to Rory Connor and he palmed it to the net.

Connerton then got his side’s fourth goal in the 45th minute and followed up with a point to extend the lead to 16 points.

Wicklow’s first score of the second half was a goal from Lennon in the 53rd minute. Longford replied with two points from substitute Killian Farrell. John Crowe got Wicklow’s final score in the 57th minute while Longford finished the game strongly with points from Connor, Dalton and another Moran free.
