Preview of Longford v Westmeath: Billy O’Loughlin’s view

Westmeath are a “strong, seasoned inter county side” and Longford will be at the “pin of their collar to get a result against the division favourites” in today’s local derby in Cusack Park, Mullingar according to Longford manager Billy O’ Loughlin.

Previewing today’s clash Billy praised his counterparts who after coming down from Division 2 are undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in the division but the Laois man assured that Longford will be ready for battle.

“Westmeath are a formidable outfit with a solid defensive set up that has been in place  for the past 3/4 seasons. Jack Cooney is a brilliant manager and they’ve been competing at a high level for the last couple of years. Much like Limerick a few weeks ago, they are a few years into a plan that seems to be working for them and we need to emulate that success in Longford.

“Westmeath would have a small turn around of players, and with all their experienced players it is no surprise the bookies have them as favourites in every game. Our lads will be ready to battle for 70 minutes and we’re going into the derby looking for a performance and to build on what we have done in the past 2 rounds.”

This is also a preview for our championship opener in May which will also be held in Cusack Park, Mullingar. Longford haven’t faced Westmeath in the Championship since 2008 but the sides have met 4 times in the league since then sharing the spoils with 2 wins apiece and with no victory amassing over 4 points.

Throw in is at 2pm today in Mullingar and after picking up their first point of the campaign against Louth, Billy and the lads could do with a big travelling support in their quest to pick up more points in this highly anticipated local derby clash.

The game is NOT being streamed live and there will be no ticket sales at the match venue. Tickets can be purchased online at https://am.ticketmaster.com/gaa/westmeathlongford2002
