To keep in touch with everything on a week-to-week basis you can keep an eye on the Coaching & Games section where fixtures and notes will be updated weekly.
20/20 Communication
As per contact from Damien all correspondence with clubs will now be conducted via email and through the club secretaries’ address ONLY. There are two addresses per club, one for the adult club (secretary.clubname.longford@gaa.ie) and one for the underage section (secretarybng.clubname.longford@gaa.ie). It is all clubs responsibility to ensure someone is monitoring these accounts and passing the information to the relevant people.
Development Squad Mentors
As part of “20/20 Vision For Longford”, Longford GAA are now looking to recruit mentors for our various Development Squads (U13, U14, U15 & U16) for the 2016 season. The role of mentor within our squad system is a very rewarding one and comes with great responsibility as you will help mould Longford’s footballers of the future. All our squad mentors are facilitated with up skilling courses and involved in a program of continuous learning. All mentors will receive Longford gear and will be supported by Coaching & Games regarding planning and logistics. If you are interested please make contact with Damien at damien.sheridan.gda.longford@gaa.ie or 087 912 6556
Award 1 Youth Course Review
Over the last 4 months we have conducted 5 Award 1 youth courses in 5 different clubs that was completed by 40 coaches. This program was trialed in Longford by Leinster GAA with the vision of rolling it our province wide in 2016. To this end we are holding a review night with all the coaches from the 5 clubs so asses how the course was delivered, what should be change to make it better, etc. we would encourage as many coaches as possible to attend as you will be helping shape the delivery of coach education throughout Leinster in 2016.
Development Squads
It was a big weekend for our Hurling squads where both the U14 and U16 teams played in the All Ireland C blitz. The U14 team travelled to Cavan where their first game was against South Ulster where they had a great win. They then had a titanic battle against Sligo who piped them with some late scores. This lead the group to play a very strong Mayo team in the Plate Final. A very strong Longford performance in the first half but Mayo pulled away in the second half. Well done to all who played, this group has put a lot of work in over the last few months and have improved so much with the work from their coaches. The story of the weekend will be the U16 team who had a brilliant victory in their blitz in Carrick on Shannon. Longford took on Donegal in the first game and recorded a fine win. In game two there was huge excitement when Longford got a last minute equaliser against South Ulster. They then had a third game and with a win against Leitrim this meant Longford would now face Louth in a winners takes all game. The Longford lads put a mammoth performance in the final when all was up for grabs. The final score was Longford 5-7 Louth 1-2. This is Longford’s second victory in 3 years in this Competition and it bodes well for the future of the these young hurlers who will move to minor grade next year and will hopefully push on to senior with the county in the years ahead. A big thanks to the coaches and parents who have worked with this team throughout the year.
The U13 football Skill School have their final coaching session on Saturday before they have their blitz in September. The U15 football squad had a Athlete Development session in the gym last Monday where they were given their programme to work at home.
